Air India today opened its first flagship Maharaja Lounge at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, unveiling a premium space aimed at showcasing Indian hospitality as the carrier continues a wide-ranging transformation under the Tata Group.
The lounge was inaugurated by N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, in advance of its opening to eligible passengers at Terminal 3's international pier, according to a statement released by Air India.
Spread across about 16,000 square feet, the Maharaja Lounge can host nearly 300 guests and is divided into Business Class areas and an exclusive First Class section branded “Air India First”.
The airline said access will be rolled out progressively for First and Business Class passengers, Maharaja Club Platinum and Gold members, as well as eligible Star Alliance Gold members starting Monday.
The lounge features several themed spaces, including the Aviator’s Bar, inspired by the airline’s origins and the 1932 flight piloted by J. R. D. Tata, the founder of the Tata Group.
Other areas include the Globetrotter’s Study for work, a Serenity Area with enclosed recliners for rest, and dedicated sleep suites within the First Class section. A Crystal Bar serves premium beverages and signature cocktails in a setting influenced by Indian design motifs.
“This flagship lounge reflects our ambition to build a world-class airline while remaining rooted in Indian culture,” Chandrasekaran was quoted as saying in the company statement.
Air India said the Delhi facility is the first in a planned network of new-generation lounges at key domestic and international airports, as the carrier seeks to enhance the premium travel experience and strengthen its position among global full-service airlines.
