Stranded Biman flight BG306 finally leaves Rome for Dhaka after technical fault;

Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG306 finally left Rome’s Fiumicino International Airport late Saturday, more than 33 hours after it was grounded due to a technical problem.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner departed Rome at 11:00 pm local time and was scheduled to reach Dhaka at 12:24 pm Bangladesh time on Sunday.

The Toronto-Rome-Dhaka flight, carrying more than 250 passengers, had departed Toronto Pearson International Airport at 5:18 pm local time on Thursday. After around eight hours of flying, the aircraft developed a technical problem and landed at Fiumicino at 7:19 am local time on Friday.

The aircraft was subsequently placed in an Aircraft on Ground (AOG) condition as initial efforts to resolve the fault failed.

Biman then dispatched a two-member engineering team from Dhaka along with the required spare parts and equipment to Rome. The engineers travelled on Biman flight BG305 on Saturday and reached Rome at around 7:16 pm local time.

Following repairs, the aircraft was declared serviceable and cleared for operation, allowing BG306 to resume its journey to Dhaka that night.

The disruption affected more than 250 passengers, including 174 Bangladeshi passport holders.

According to passengers, those holding Canadian, US and other foreign passports, or relevant visas, were allowed to clear Italian immigration and were accommodated at hotels.

The Bangladeshi passport holders, however, could not clear immigration and remained inside the airport during the disruption.

Biman said it could not arrange hotel accommodation for the Bangladeshi passengers as they were unable to enter Italy.
