Air India said all its flights currently serving Visakhapatnam International Airport will move to the newly built Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram, in India's southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh, effective Monday, August 17, 2026, the carrier announced in a press release.

The new airport, located roughly 30 kilometres from the city of Visakhapatnam, will retain the same three-letter airport code, VTZ, easing the transition for travellers and cargo operators, according to the airline.

Air India said it will continue operating 14 weekly flights between Bhogapuram and the national capital, New Delhi, giving passengers onward connections to domestic and international destinations through its hub network.

The carrier described the new terminal as a significant upgrade in capacity and passenger facilities. Spanning 77,342 square metres, the building includes 22 conventional check-in counters, 18 self-service baggage drop units, upgraded security screening systems, modern baggage-handling infrastructure, and seven aerobridges for direct boarding, the airline said.

Air India did not name a spokesperson or attribute direct quotes in the press release announcing the move. The statement was issued through the airline's official newsroom on August 16, 2026, a day ahead of the switch to the new facility.

The relocation is part of a broader expansion of airport infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh, where the Bhogapuram facility has been developed to eventually replace the older Visakhapatnam airport as the region's primary international gateway. Air India, part of the Tata Group and a member of the Star Alliance network, has been steadily expanding its domestic and international route network over the past year.
