Airbus said on Monday that Atlas Air Worldwide has placed a firm order for 20 A350F freighter aircraft, marking the largest single order for the model and making the US-based cargo operator the biggest customer for the new-generation freighter.

The European planemaker said in a press release that the agreement represents a significant milestone for its A350F programme, as Atlas positions itself for future growth in global air cargo operations.

Atlas Air Worldwide, headquartered in New York, is a major provider of outsourced aviation logistics services, operating across multiple business models and markets. The company said the A350F aircraft will support expansion plans and enhance its fleet with more fuel-efficient and technologically advanced freighters.

“We are proud to become the largest customer for the Airbus A350F, securing early delivery positions for this next-generation widebody freighter platform,” said Michael Steen, Chief Executive Officer of Atlas Air Worldwide. He added that the order reflects the company’s strategy to maintain a modern and fuel-efficient fleet while serving a broad global customer base.

Airbus officials described the deal as a key development for the programmme, particularly in the U.S. market. “Atlas Air’s selection of the latest generation A350F—the first in the US—represents a pivotal moment,” said Lars Wagner, CEO of Commercial Aircraft at Airbus.

The A350F is Airbus’ latest widebody freighter, designed to improve efficiency and sustainability in cargo operations. According to Airbus, the aircraft features the industry’s largest main deck cargo door and is optimised for standard pallets and containers. More than 70 percent of its airframe is made from advanced materials, resulting in a significantly lower takeoff weight compared to competing models.

The aircraft is also expected to meet the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)’s enhanced carbon dioxide emissions standards set to take effect in 2027, positioning it as a lower-emission option for cargo carriers.

Industry analysts say the order reflects continued demand for modern freighter aircraft as global supply chains evolve and e-commerce drives cargo growth. The addition of the A350F is expected to strengthen Atlas Air’s operational capabilities across its network, which spans more than 300 destinations in around 90 countries.

Atlas Air Worldwide, the parent company of Atlas Air, Titan Aviation Holdings, and Polar Air Cargo, employs approximately 5,000 people worldwide.

The company expects the aircraft deliveries to support its long-term fleet renewal and expansion strategy, further solidifying Airbus' position in the global freighter market.
