Bangladesh
Army has initiated procurement of four refurbished UH-60L Black
Hawk helicopters from United States (US) to modernize its rotary-wing aviation
capability.
Directorate General Defence Purchase (DGDP) under
Ministry of Defence issued tender number 221.579.25 on December 31 last year
for acquiring the medium, twin-engine helicopters. Sealed bids have been
invited from enlisted local and foreign manufacturers or suppliers.
Tender schedule sale period runs from December 31 last
year to January 27 this year, with opening date set for late January. Documents
confirm the helicopters are categorized as medium, multi-engine platforms
specifically from Black Hawk UH-60L series.
Initiative marks notable development in Bangladesh Army
Aviation's future force structure. UH-60L Black Hawk is widely used military
utility helicopter known for transport, medical evacuation and tactical
operations. United States military and allied forces operate thousands of these
aircraft globally.
Procurement focuses on refurbished units rather than
brand-new helicopters, likely allowing cost savings while maintaining
operational capability. Black Hawks can carry 11 combat-equipped troops or
2,600 pounds of cargo, making them versatile for various military operations.
According to regional defence review War Power Bangladesh,
Bangladesh Army currently operates Russian-made Mi-17 helicopters as primary
medium-lift platforms.
Addition of American Black Hawks would diversify fleet
and enhance interoperability with Western military forces. Helicopters feature
advanced avionics, robust design and proven reliability in diverse climates.
