Bangladesh's ambassador to Libya, Major General Md. Habib Ullah, met with the mayor of Misrata on 13 April to discuss the welfare, rights, and security of Bangladeshi migrant workers residing in the Libyan port city, the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli said in a statement.

The meeting with Mayor Mahmoud al-Sagutri was also attended by the chairman and general manager of the Misrata General Public Service Company, a representative of Libya's foreign ministry, and the embassy's first secretary for labour affairs.

Mayor al-Sagutri described Misrata as one of Libya's safer cities, saying the municipality provided uninterrupted services to all residents. He acknowledged that Bangladeshi workers made meaningful contributions to the city's service sector, commerce, and development projects and said the municipality was actively working to safeguard their rights.

Ambassador Habib Ullah thanked the mayor for employment opportunities extended to Bangladeshi workers and urged further steps to protect their professional interests.

He proposed that the authorities issue formal identity cards—known as Betaqa—to Bangladeshi nationals living across the broader Misrata area, providing institutional recognition and better legal protection. The embassy indicated that it is ready to extend full cooperation in implementing the scheme.

Mayor al-Sagutri accepted the proposal and gave assurances that the municipality would take the necessary steps through a designated committee, the embassy said.

The ambassador also raised contract-related matters for workers at the Public Service Company, including the remittance of salaries, working hours, and occupational conditions. Both sides agreed to work together to streamline the recruitment process, improve workforce skills, and raise service standards. They also expressed an intention to strengthen communication and cooperation going forward.

The chairman and general manager of the Misrata General Public Service Company told the meeting that more than a hundred Bangladeshi workers were currently employed at the firm, whose continuous performance was described as essential to the company's operations.

They stressed the importance of ensuring that prospective workers received thorough briefings on the nature and conditions of the work before departing for Libya.
