Brazilian singer Rey Vaqueiro and seven others survived after the jet carrying them overran the runway and caught fire while landing at Kareli Airport in Parelhas, Rio Grande do Norte, in the early hours of Sunday, September 13.

The aircraft, a Cessna 550 Citation Bravo registered PP-WMO, left the runway during landing at around 1:00 AM local time and subsequently caught fire, with both engines engulfed in flames, according to local reports.

Firefighters were called to the scene, but the operation was complicated by the fuel in the aircraft's wings and one engine still running during the blaze. The jet was destroyed.

All eight people on board — six passengers and two crew members — managed to leave the aircraft in time and survived. They were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Vaqueiro's wife, Thaynan Farias, said in a social media video that the singer suffered injuries to his back and foot but was doing well, adding that everyone on board was safe.

The mayor of Parelhas, Tiago Almeida, shared photos following medical treatment given to the singer and thanked healthcare workers involved in the response.

Two aircraft used by the singer had arrived at the airport; he had been travelling to perform the second of two scheduled shows over the weekend when the accident occurred.

The circumstances behind the runway excursion have not yet been established. Brazil's Air Force (FAB) and National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) are expected to be involved in determining the cause, though neither had responded to press inquiries at the time of initial reports.
