Etihad Airways said Friday it has launched its first international summer deployment programme for high-performing Emirati airport trainees, sending seven UAE nationals to overseas stations as part of the airline's efforts to develop local aviation talent and support its expanding global operations.

In a press release, the Abu Dhabi-based carrier said the programme offers participants hands-on operational experience and international exposure following completion of the foundation phase of its Airports and Ground Operations Programmes.

The inaugural group of seven Emirati trainees will be deployed to some of Etihad's busiest international destinations, including Copenhagen, Paris, Phuket, and Kuala Lumpur, during the peak summer travel season. The airline said the selected stations were chosen because of their high passenger volumes, allowing trainees to apply the skills acquired in Abu Dhabi in live operational environments.

According to Etihad, the Airports and Ground Operations Programmes begin with practical training at its hub, Zayed International Airport, combined with classroom instruction. Trainees rotate through frontline functions including check-in, boarding, transfer services, baggage handling and arrivals before progressing to airport supervisory roles. The programme also provides exposure to network operations and aircraft dispatch.

Dr. Nadia Bastaki, Etihad's Chief People, Government and Corporate Affairs Officer, said Emirati talent remains central to the airline's long-term growth strategy.

"Since launching our Emiratisation strategy last year, we have invested in programmes that combine world-class operational training with meaningful international exposure, giving flight to the ambitions of our Emirati talent and equipping them with the skills, confidence and global perspective to thrive," she said.

Captain Majed Al Marzouqi, Chief Operations and Guest Officer, said airport personnel play a critical role in ensuring safe and efficient airline operations.

"Through hands-on experience across our global network, they gain practical insights, exchange knowledge with international colleagues and experience diverse operational and cultural environments," he said, adding that the overseas assignments also allow young Emiratis to represent the UAE internationally.

Etihad said the airport training initiative forms part of its broader Emiratisation strategy, which aims to create long-term career opportunities for UAE nationals while supporting the airline's operational expansion. The carrier said graduates of previous programmes now oversee airport operations across East Asia, Europe, the Gulf region and North Africa.

The airline said the new international deployment programme is expected to strengthen the development of future Emirati aviation professionals as Etihad continues to expand its network and reinforce Abu Dhabi's position as a global aviation hub. It also encouraged UAE nationals interested in aviation careers to apply for future editions of the programme.
