Dhaka Metropolitan Court sent Md Habibur Rahman, former Chief Engineer of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), to jail on Wednesday over allegations of embezzling TK 150 crore during construction of Cox’s Bazar International Airport terminal and runway.

Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz ordered the imprisonment after Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigation officer requested remand until inquiry completion.

ACC public prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi confirmed the matter to BSS.

ACC team arrested Habibur Rahman on Wednesday from capital’s Segunbagicha area. He was brought before the court same day for hearing on the corruption case.

ACC filed the case on January 27 last year against 10 individuals, including former Prime Minister's Military Adviser Tarique Ahmed Siddique, over irregularities and corruption in runway expansion project at Cox's Bazar Airport.

Case centers on alleged financial misconduct during construction phase of terminal building and runway infrastructure at southeastern coastal city’s international airport. Cox’s Bazar International Airport serves one of country’s most popular tourist destinations.

Investigation continues into full extent of alleged embezzlement and involvement of other accused individuals. Court proceedings will determine next steps in prosecution as ACC completes its inquiry into the corruption allegations.
