Millat promoted to minister as cabinet expanded

State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat has been promoted to a full Minister as Prime Minister Tarique Rahman reshuffled his cabinet on August 21, 2026, in a major move to strengthen and reorganise the Council of Ministers.

The expansion, marking the administration’s first six months in office, saw the induction of four full ministers and two state ministers.

The newly promoted minister, Rashiduzzaman Millat, took his oath of office and secrecy alongside three other newly appointed ministers: BNP Standing Committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) Chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partho, and Member of Parliament from Bandarban Saching Prue Jerry.

Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir administered the oath of office and secrecy at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban at around 7:45pm on August 21, 2026.

The swearing-in ceremony took place shortly after the President took his own oath of office as the country’s 23rd president, following his election by parliament on August 20, 2026.

During the same ceremony, Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir and Gaibandha-4 lawmaker Mohammad Shamim Kaiser Lincoln were sworn in as state ministers.

With this latest cabinet expansion, the Council of Ministers, including the prime minister, has grown to 55 members, comprising 28 ministers and 27 state ministers.

This is an increase from the initial 50-member cabinet—consisting of 25 ministers, 24 state ministers, and the prime minister—formed on February 17, 2026, following the parliamentary election held on February 12, 2026.

The Prime Minister had also originally appointed 10 advisers, with five holding ministerial rank and five holding the rank of state minister.

This expansion represents the latest of several adjustments within the cabinet since its formation on February 17, 2026.

Previously on March 13, 2026, BNP lawmaker Ahmed Azam Khan was appointed as the Minister of Liberation War Affairs. This appointment followed the election of the previous minister, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, as the Speaker of Parliament.

Later, on June 1, 2026, Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Minister Dipen Dewan resigned from his post due to health complications, leaving the ministry vacant.

The reorganisation of the cabinet coincides with the completion of the government's first 180 days in office.

Highlighting the government's progress, Prime Minister's Office Spokesperson Mahdi Amin stated on August 17, 2026, that extensive public engagement and the active implementation of electoral pledges have been among the administration's primary achievements during its initial six months in power.
