The international airport serving Venezuela's capital, Caracas, will reopen to commercial flights on September 1, two months after it was devastated by twin earthquakes, the airport announced on Tuesday, according to AFP.

Maiquetia International Airport, located in Guaira state—the region worst hit by the June 24 twin earthquakes—said domestic and international flights would resume operations from provisional terminals.

The airport said the reopening marked the restoration of Venezuela's "connection to the world" following the powerful back-to-back quakes, which left more than 6,500 people dead and thousands still missing.

The disaster caused significant damage to the airport's infrastructure, including its main runway, limiting operations to humanitarian flights for several weeks. Air traffic during this period was rerouted to smaller regional airports.

Earlier this month, the airport had announced the setup of two provisional departure terminals and two arrival terminals in large tents outside the damaged airport buildings to enable a phased return to service.
