Thirty-nine international flights were cancelled from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday as Middle Eastern countries continue airspace restrictions due to regional security concerns.
Flight disruptions began on February 28 afternoon when Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan temporarily closed their airspace. Today's cancellations bring three-day total to 102 scrapped flights from Dhaka.
Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh confirmed that 10 US-Bangla Airlines flights were cancelled today, highest among all carriers. Air Arabia from Sharjah scrapped 8 flights while Emirates Airlines cancelled 5 operations.
Other affected carriers include Qatar Airways with 4 cancelled flights, Flydubai 4, Biman Bangladesh Airlines 4, Gulf Air 2, and Kuwait Airways 2. All cancelled flights were scheduled for destinations across Gulf region.
Routes to Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Dubai remain suspended. Flight operations have resumed on other Middle Eastern routes where airspace restrictions have been lifted.
Thousands of Bangladeshi passengers faced severe disruptions today, particularly migrant workers and business travellers bound for Gulf states. Airlines are attempting to reschedule affected passengers on alternative routes where available.
Bangladesh maintains crucial aviation links with Middle East, which employs approximately 40 lakh Bangladeshi expatriate workers. Weekly flight frequency to Gulf destinations typically exceeds 200 operations from Dhaka airport.
Previous two days saw 23 flights cancelled on February 28 and 40 flights on March 1. Aviation authorities are monitoring situation closely and coordinating with international partners for airspace reopening updates.
Airlines have been advised to keep passengers informed about real-time flight status changes as regional security situation remains fluid.
