Government assures support as body of Bangladeshi died in Bahrain returns home

The body of a Bangladeshi migrant worker killed in the ongoing Middle East conflict arrived in Dhaka on Friday, as senior government officials received the remains and announced financial assistance for the deceased's family.


The remains of S M Tarek, who died in Bahrain, were repatriated aboard Gulf Air flight GF-2250 from Dammam, Saudi Arabia, to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, a press release said. 


The Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, Ariful Haq Chowdhury, along with State Minister Md. Nurul Haq and Foreign Affairs State Minister Shama Obaed Islam, received the body at the airport.


Minister Chowdhury confirmed that six Bangladeshi nationals have so far died in the Middle East conflict. He said the ministries of expatriates' welfare, foreign affairs, and civil aviation were coordinating jointly to expedite the repatriation of remains.


The government announced that the Wage Earners' Welfare Board had provided the family with 35,000 taka for funeral expenses and an immediate cash payment of 50,000 taka. Additional financial support of 300,000 taka and insurance compensation of 1,000,000 taka are to follow. Long-term assistance through the deceased's local member of parliament was also pledged.


State Minister Nurul Haq said three bodies of Bangladeshi migrant workers had been repatriated to date. He added that the ministry was maintaining continuous contact with the families of all those killed and was disseminating safety advisories to Bangladeshis remaining in the region.


Foreign Affairs State Minister Shama Obaed Islam stated that the government was engaged in diplomatic efforts to secure visa extensions for Bangladeshi workers affected by the conflict. She also said the government was taking firm action against human trafficking networks and was working to repatriate Bangladeshis held in camps in Greece.


Also present at the airport were Member of Parliament SM Jahangir Hossain of the Dhaka-18 constituency, Ministry Secretary Md. Mokhtar Ahmed, Director General (Consular and Welfare) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dewan Ali Ashraf, and Acting Director General of the Wage Earners' Welfare Board Dr. A.T.M. Mahbub-ul Karim.
