Overseas worker returning from Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah, lost all his belongings to robbers shortly after landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (Dhaka airport).

He had been sending remittances from that country and was returning home with his savings and belongings.

On Monday, Criminals targeted Alamgir Sheikh at Chourasta in Gazipur while he was travelling home to Asahar (village) in Gafargaon, Mymensingh. Gang members allegedly drugged him with an intoxicating substance in a microbus, leaving him unconscious.

Robbers looted his luggage, cash, Saudi Riyals, gold jewellery and mobile phone before dumping him beside the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. Local pedestrians discovered him in the afternoon and contacted his family, who brought him home.

Officer-in-charge of Bason Police Station Harunur Rashid confirmed that authorities are taking the matter seriously. Investigation has begun to identify those involved in the robbery.

Passerby Maulana Ismail Hossain said that seeing the migrant worker, it seemed he had been given some intoxicating substance. He was unable to speak properly. Later, when he regained consciousness, he said that the incident had occurred while he was on the microbus from the airport.

Local residents expressed anger and concern over the robbery. Alamgir lost everything he had earned abroad within hours of returning to Bangladesh.

Family members said that after he departed by microbus heading toward Trishal, there was no news of him for a long time. In the meantime, they received a call from an unknown number informing them that their migrant relative was lying unconscious at Gazipur Chourasta.

Police are investigating how the gang identified and targeted the migrant worker. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether similar incidents have been reported recently at the same location.
