Pilot gets surprise of a lifetime: both parents on her flight

When 22-year-old pilot Zoe de Bruin began preparing for a routine flight from Amsterdam to Curaçao, she did not expect to be working alongside both her parents, Gulf News reported.

As she went through her pre-flight preparations, she discovered that the captain of the aircraft was her father, Michael, 57. A little later, she learned that the flight attendant in the cabin was her mother, Marjan van Nooijen, 56. None of them had planned it. Their rosters had simply lined up.

The coincidence turned an ordinary service to the Caribbean island, which is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, into a rare family reunion at work.

Michael is a captain with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Marjan’s presence on board was also a return of sorts. She recently went back to cabin crew duties after a long absence from aviation. She had left the profession in 2000.

For Zoe, the flight was the latest chapter in a story that began long before she earned her wings. She said her father inspired her to become a pilot. As a child, she would watch him get ready for work in his uniform, and that sight sparked her interest in flying.

That early fascination eventually led her into the cockpit, following in her father’s footsteps.

This was not the first time her career had crossed paths with her parents’ careers. Zoe said she had previously flown with her father on five flights and had shared one flight with her mother. But never before had all three of them worked the same aircraft at the same time.

According to the report, the schedules matched entirely by chance, making the Amsterdam-Curaçao journey a rare occasion on which three members of one family carried out their professional duties on the same flight.
