At least 12 people were killed and 309 others injured in an attack on King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Saturday, Saudi authorities said.
The Saudi civil aviation authority said the dead included four Saudis, two Bangladeshis, and one person each from the United States, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan, and Egypt. Some of the injured were in critical condition, it added.
Operations at the airport have been suspended, and authorities are assessing the damage.
An eyewitness who was in the domestic terminal said gate 401 was hit. “Everyone was running,” the eyewitness said. Reuters, citing an eyewitness, reported that more than a dozen ambulances were seen rushing to the airport.
A spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition said the attack on one of the passenger terminals caused deaths and injuries among civilian passengers and airport staff.
The coalition also said a projectile fell near King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, in eastern Saudi Arabia, on Saturday.
The attack came a day after two strikes on the Riyadh airport killed three people, including a pilot, and damaged an aircraft. Attacks on two Saudi airports on October 6 and 7 killed another three people.
Flightradar24 data shows all flights to Riyadh have been either diverted or cancelled. Several Gulf airlines have cancelled their flights to and from the airport, with Kuwait Airways citing the “security situation” there.
Western embassies in Saudi Arabia have warned their citizens to stay away from the airport. The UK Foreign Office advised British nationals to avoid the area until the airport is secure.
