Tanzania plane makes emergency belly landing, no injuries

An Embraer aircraft carrying 26 passengers and four crew made an emergency landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport on Sunday after a landing gear malfunction, the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) said. There were no deaths or injuries.

The aircraft was flying from the Serengeti to Zanzibar when it diverted to Kilimanjaro, the authority said. Normal services at the airport resumed after the plane was removed from the runway, it said. Video of the landing has circulated online.

Media reports said the aircraft belonged to Sindbard Air and had taken off from the Seronera airstrip inside Serengeti National Park. According to Bluewin, the aircraft later reported a problem with its landing gear and was diverted to Kilimanjaro, where it made a belly landing.

Tanzanian aviation authorities have reportedly opened an investigation into the incident.

The TAA statement described the aircraft as an Embraer 125. Some media reports identified it as an Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia. The type has not been confirmed by the authorities.
